A Good Start to a New Year

I have always hated New Years Eve.  It's a night where you are expected to get dressed up, go to a club or a fancy party, be surrounded by strangers and have way to much to drink. All of that sounds like my worst nightmare.  Even in college, where I was supposed to be a party animal, I preferred the homebody lifestyle. It was quite refreshing this year when Facebook statuses and Twitter updates all declared the same sentiment -"I'll be lucky if I make it to midnight".  Finally, my peer group is catching up to my old lady mindset!

If my 2010 NYE celebration is any indication on how my 2011 is going to go, it's going to be a good year.

First, it was spent with my husband, son, and only a few close friends.  We all gathered at a friends house, dressed in comfortable clothes and enjoyed each others company.  No blaring music.  No drunk strangers. No seizure inducing strobe lights.  Just good conversation and lots of laughs with those I love. That sounds like a good way to spend most of 2011, don't you think?

Second, there was great food.  We stuffed our faces with various styles of fondue and things to dip into the oil, cheese or chocolate.  Good wine was also involved.  While 2011 is my year of health and weight loss, I do plan the occasional indulgence and hope the future brings many delicious meals.

Third, there were fireworks.  Technically I don't like fireworks.  They scare me and I'm always worried someone is going to blow off their hand. However, I do like excitement, surprise, inspiration and bursts of color.   I hope 2011 is full of the happy, unexpected surprise that keeps life interesting and joyful. I also hope to keep all my limbs in tact.

Finally my New Years Eve celebration involved the blessed joining of two massive forces:  New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys.  My guilty pleasure sensors were on absolute overload. My Cheese-o-Meter was off the charts.  I am not ashamed to admit I loved watching the boy band-palooza. I can only hope that my 2011 is filled with more silliness, more guilty pleasures and more laughter.  Oh, and also tickets to the Atlanta BSB/NKOTB reunion tour this spring.  Please don't judge me. You know you loved it too.

If my New Years Eve celebration is any indication of how new year will go, I think I'm in for a treat.

This post was inspired by the Writers Workshop prompt: If the way you spent your New Year’s Eve is any indication of how the rest of the year will go, how would you say your future is looking right about now?

awww, your posts always make me smile. Thinking of my own recent NYEs they are highly unremarkable. Two years ago I felt crummy and went to bed around 9pm, year before I worked till 11 but did make it to a shindig with friends to play games till sleepiness won out. This past year was actually suppose to be Brannon and I's first midnight together - instead I ended up working till 3am and only realized midnight had come and gone when a resident pointed it out to me while I passed out water jugs. hmmm, what does that say about my upcoming year? on one level choosing work/finances over personal time is mature and depressing too. On the other hand I love that it was something that Brannon and I just rolled with. We had a wonderful new years day doing our kind of stuff, and we had an amazing first christmas together even though I worked both Christmas eve and day. these things I think bode well.

Oh my! If I'm going to ramble this much perhaps I should get my own blog. I actually wanted to tell you how one of my all time favorite new years was having fondue with liz and her family then ended up at Brett's house hanging out with him and his parents when we all went around the room sharing what we'd learned and what we hoped for the new year then everyone exchanging european cheek kisses at midnight.

Anyways I love so much that your blog helps me keep up with you and Brett and Max and I can't wait till we're all actually in OH at the same time or you guys take a western vacation or I make it down south again! Happy 2011!

Love it! I'm so with ya, I like NYE about as much as I like Halloween...which isn't saying much!

I was the same way in college. I was never much of a partier either. I just didn't find the appeal of getting beer spilled on me, talking to random drunk people, and getting hit on by nasty drunk frat boys. Yeah, no thanks!

That sounds like the perfect way to spend NYE if you ask me!

Okay... you totally had me. Up until the boy band-palooza part, that is. I never would have guessed that about you, Laura! :)

But the rest of your New Year's? Sounds a lot like mine. We really are party animals in our old age, aren't we?

Our NYE sound similar! My best friend from Chicago came down to visit me for the weekend and we spent NYE with her and our married friends playing board games. After Nellie was in bed we broke out the snacks, drinks (whipped cream flavored vodka.. YUM) and played board games until the ball dropped. We had so much fun and no one was plastered, falling down, or puking. We did stop our board game to watch the NKOTB/BSB which I dubbed the "Mid-Life Crisis Tour". I gleaned a small amount of pleasure from NKOTB because I was a hardcore fan as a kid. Not so much BSB. ;)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with "an old lady mindset!" It sounds like your new year's even was tons of fun!

Your NYE sounds pretty darn perfect to me....we were *happily* asleep 15 minutes after the countdown. I almost changed into my jammies too for the countdown, but I was too lazy to go up the stairs at my parents house. Oh, and our toasting beverages? Water, Welch's grape juice, and warm milk. Yeahhhh buddy!

I totally agree with your sentiments of NYE. And I also have an irrational fear of fireworks. They scare the crap out of me!
