Birthday Boy

Happy Birthday to the greatest husband ever.

Here are just 5 of less obvious reasons I love him. I mean, everyone says their hubs is kind, sweet, romantic, great father, blah blah blah.  Brett is all of those things too.  However, those reasons are boring.  I love Brett because he is anything but boring.

5) He's crazy smart.  Like read Steven Hawking in his teens, smart. Designs robots for fun, smart. Makes airplanes fly for a living, smart.  Points out when the science talk on Big Bang Theory is wrong, smart.  Dying to vacation at the Large Hadron Collider, smart.  Explains to me why the world won't get sucked into a black hole of said collider works, smart.

4) He can fix everything.  From car window motors, to hair dryers to bike chains, the man has a serious knack.  I mean, just our internet rig up alone would stump most corporate IT guys.

3) He makes THE BEST steak ever.  It's better than anything I've had at a top of the line steak house.  Plus, he doesn't snub me when I then coat the delicious hunk o' beef in A1 sauce.

2) He supports my blogging.  Some people complain that their husbands bitch about them being on the computer too much.  Not mine!  He understands it's a sanity outlet and always stops what he's doing to help me re-phrase a sentence, think of a good word or listen to a post.

1) He wears suspenders with suits. Seriously awesome.

Happy Birthday Brett!  I love you. We got together like cocaine and waffles*.

Church Distraction

When Max was born I knew my ability to concentrate during mass was going to be limited.  I expected to be contemplating his cuteness during the homily or taking him outside to calm crying during the first reading.  What I didn't expect is how he would also distract the rest of the congregation.

Don't misunderstand.  Max is simply brilliant during church.  Maybe every 5th week one of us will have to run outside to calm a fit of loud fussiness but most of the time he's quiet and smiling throughout mass.  And that's the problem.

He's too darn cute!

Everyone who sits next to us or behind us is too busy smiling and making faces at Max to pay attention to what our priest is saying. Yesterday during the second reading I could hear the woman behind me softly cooing "Hey big eyes.  You are just too adorable". I feel bad but it's obvious that no one is annoyed by my precious son.

I felt especially bad for our priest at the mass before Max's baptism.  We sat in the front row.  Would you have been able to pay attention to a homily designed to save your soul with this little guy smiling at you?

Snot, Snot and more Snot!

Poor Max has a cold. Again. Actually it's not just a cold.  It's some rare condition where he generates more snot then your average adult.  Seriously, the poor child is covered is boogers.   Combined with the liters of drool spewing from his mouth, it's pretty disgusting. Adorable, but disgusting.  See?

It's not like this is anything new.  Since he was 4 weeks old, he started this perpetual cold that varies in seriousness.  Usually, he has a few sniffles,  or sounds congested but what he has now is way worse. At night he's so stuffy he can't suck his thumb and breathe at the same time.  Therefore he keeps waking himself up. Brett and I are essentially walking zombies because it takes so long to calm the poor kid down and get him back to sleep.  Then, an hour later, we're at it again.

It's so bad we've had to break out the nasal aspirator to help clear his nose. I hate using it but Max hates it even more. He thrashes like crazy and it requires multiple people to hold him still.  When the actual snot sucking takes place it scares the hell out of him.  He lets out the most heartbreaking, blood curdling, "Oh my fucking god please stop killing me" scream. I know it doesn't hurt him; that's a completely different cry.  But he hates it so much and it breaks my heart to have to do it.

Hubs and I have tried multiple techniques to make the process less scary for Max. Big smiles as we approach. Using the battery powered "bwain sucker" that plays music. Singing to him. Cuddling him both before and after we try to remove snot. None of it works. And his cries are so pathetically heartbreaking, last night I was in tears too.

This hatred of the snot sucker is new.  He used to smile when we used the battery powered one and he loved the music.  Not so much any more. Now he hates any and all snot removal techniques, from whipping his nose with the tissue to the bulb syringe. We try to keep the "sucking" to an absolutely minimum but it has to be done.  Even saline drops (which he also hates with a violent passion) aren't helpful.

So until this round of "Snot Fest-Summer2010" ends we'll keep sucking snot, rubbing in the Vicks, sitting him in the bathroom while we shower and endlessly running the humidifier (despite the fact its 98% humidity outside). Even when dressed adorably, the poor kid just looks miserable.

Adorable, but miserable.

Life got in the way

Dear My Blog and Blogs I enjoy reading,

I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you.  I miss being near you. I miss your laugh.  I miss your scent. I miss your musk.  When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.

Love,
Laura

Ten million awesome points for the first person who can name that movie.

Anyway, between our internet going out several times (screw you Comcast) and life being insanely busy I have not been able to blog or even check out my favorite reads. Also, my 8:30 PM bedtime might also be to blame.  Sleep when the baby sleeps, right?  This weekend when things slow down I can get my bloggy life back.  Until then, enjoy this picture of Max rocking a Vienna Beef onesie, the only hot dog you can use for an official Chicago Style Hot Dog**:

** That's what they tell me.  I don't actually like hot dogs.  However, the Vienna Beef Italian Beef is ridiculously awesome and the only kind of Italian Beef.  I'm sad I can't find any place that sells it here in Savannah. :-(

Better Day

Today Max was a totally different kiddo.  Lots of smiles and coos. Little fussing.  Going down for naps without a fight. Displaying Truthiness as a Colbaby.

Also, in a major breakthrough, he decided he wasn't going to hate his Bumbo anymore!

Note the new onesie.  Max decided to pee on truthiness.

These are the days that make me melt with joy.
